The Project

The client's brief was to design, manufacture and install a car park for a block of ninety six apartments on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
The 2500m2 car park will house 82 cars.

The basement walls were built in four weeks using dense concrete panels 250mm thick. The largest panels are 4m long and 3.1m high.

The contract comprised external and internal walls, three lift and stair cores and precast staircases from basement to the ground floor.
Steel beams and hollowcore floors are being fitted over the next three weeks.

The client is Soverign House Developments Ltd who are based in Livingston.

External Walls

More than 80 external panels were fitted using a 100tonne mobile crane.

Design Team

The Design Team comprised ThermoneX structural Engineers (Walls & Floors), Scott Bennett Associates (Steel Design,
Wolgar Hunter, (Foundations, Client's Engineers) and ARM Architects (Client's Architect). The timber frame apartment which will sit on the basement was manufactured by Stewart Milne Scotland.

Internal Walls

More than 60 internal walls, as well as lift and stair walls and concerete lintels were fixed to support the steel beams before the hollowcore units for the ground floor were fitted.

Connections

Steel reinforcing bars are threaded though loops in the panels to connect them together before a waterproof expanding grout is poured into the recess.

Steel Beams and Floor Units

Steel beams were fixed into pre-formed pockets in the walls. These support the floor units 200-300mm thick and provide a step in the slab as the basement is larger than the ground floor footprint. Some amenity space will be created on top of the basement at ground floor level.

Programme

More than 2500 square metres of parking and storage space is being fitted in a 12 week programme. The programme is co-ordinated with the client to allow linking foundations to be built at the same time as the basement.

The project includes precast liftshafts and staircases to from the basement car parking level to the apartments on the ground floor.

Flooring

Some of the hollowcores were broken out to accommodate ties from the lower walls to the floors to comply with progressive collapse codes.

When we have finished on site all the client has to do is backfill around the basement with a free draining stone.
