Tilt Dam

ThermoneX have completed the first contract for a new flood defence system.

The patented Tiltdam system has been successfully installed at a site in Sheffield using ThermoneX precast units.

The contract was completed by ThermoneX, Tiltdam and Littlehampton Welding.

The system comprises a U-shaped channel with a counterweighted lid sitting on top forming a pavement. The pavement is unlocked and rotated by hand to form a vertical flood defence.

The beauty of the system is it is all done by gravity. The design principles are reliability, safety, simplicity, robustness, repid mobilisation and easy maintenance.

The units are designed to protect the Home Office building from the River Don which runs adjacent to the site at Riverside in the city centre.
96 Linear metres of flood defences were installed in a four week programme on site.

The channel units weighed 3 tonnes with the lids weighing 2 tonnes including the counterweight.
The lid units were coloured and patterned to match the paving around the site - in this case a Tegula paving and a buff saxon flag.

The site was very restricted during the construction phase as other contractors were finishing the building and groundworks around the Tiltdam installation.

The tolerances were very tight to ensure the gap between each of the adjhacent units was large enough to allow clearance but small enough for the seals to work.

The contract was completed on time on budget and considered a success by all concerned.
